One hertz seismic attenuation for low frequency gravitational waves interferometers

چکیده
This article describes a mechanical vertical attenuation system capable to provide large attenuation factors above 1Hz. This system is derived from, and improves, the passive Geometric Anti-Spring seismic attenuation filters minimizing their vertical resonant frequency by means of a tunable electromagnetic spring mounted in parallel with the main spring. The tunable spring is also used to compensate thermal drift in the new arrangement. We found an unexplained deviation from the 1=f 2 transfer function at resonant frequencies below 100mHz. r 2005 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Improving the seismic noise attenuation performance of the Monolithic Geometric Anti Spring filters for Gravitational Wave Interferometric Detectors
The Monolithic Geometric Anti-Spring (GAS) Filter is one of the most efficient vertical seismic isolation devices for Gravitational Waves (GW) interferometers. Until now, each filter could provide a maximum of 60 dB of attenuation because of the high frequency saturation introduced by the distributed mass of its elastic structure, a limitation typical of some passive mechanical filters. We desi...

The Monolithic Geometric Anti-Spring (GAS) Filter is one of the most efficient vertical seismic isolation devices for Gravitational Waves (GW) interferometers. However, the attenuation of this filter was previously limited to around 60dB due to the high frequency saturation associated with the filter’s distributed mass a problem typical of passive mechanical filters. We show that it is possible...

The noise sources of gravitational wave detectors for ground-based laser interferometers by example of LIGO were analyzed. As shown the low-frequency gravitational waves (GW) cause to changes in the detectors’ dynamic properties, which manifested as the Q-factor’s changes of lowfrequency seismic component in a detectors’ integral noise that leads to the possibility of indirect GW’s observation ...

Gravitational wave detectors aim to detect strain perturbations of space-time on the order of 10−21–10−22 at frequencies between 1 Hz and a few kHz. This space-time strain, integrated over kilometer scale interferometers, will induce movements of suspended mirrors on the order of 10−18–10−19 m. Seismic motion in this frequency band varies between 10−6 m and 10−12 m. Required seismic attenuation...

The LIGO experiment aims to detect and study gravitational waves using ground based laser interferometry. A critical factor to the performance of the interferometers, and a major consideration in the design of possible future upgrades, is isolation of the interferometer optics from seismic noise. We present the results of a detailed program of measurements of the seismic environment surrounding...
